✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ entered with Mariya al-Qibtiyya, his concubine, into the house of Hafsa bt. Umar, and she found her with him. She said, 'O Messenger of God, in my house among the houses of your wives?' He said, 'She is forbidden to me to touch, O Hafsa, and keep this secret for me.' She went out until she came to Aisha and said, 'O daughter of Abu Bakr, shall I give you good news?' She said, 'About what?' She said, 'I found Mariya with the Messenger of God ﷺ in my house. I said, "O Messenger of God, in my house among the houses of your wives? And with me you do this among your wives?" The first joy was that he forbade her to himself. Then he said to me, "O Hafsa, shall I give you good news?" I said, "Yes, by my father and mother, O Messenger of God." He informed me that your father will assume authority after him, and that my father will assume it after your father, and he made me keep it secret, so keep it secret.' Then God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning that: 'O Prophet, why do you prohibit what God has made lawful for you,' meaning Mariya, 'seeking the pleasure of your wives,' meaning Hafsa, 'and God is Forgiving, Merciful,' meaning for what you did. 'God has ordained for you the dissolution of your oaths. God is your Protector, and He is the Knowing, the Wise. And when the Prophet confided a matter to one of his wives,' meaning Hafsa, 'and she disclosed it,' meaning to Aisha, 'and God made it known to him,' that is, through the Quran, 'he acknowledged part of it,' Hafsa acknowledged what she had revealed about the matter of Mariya, 'and turned away from part,' from what she had informed about Abu Bakr and Umar, and did not reproach her for it. 'When he informed her of it, she said, "Who told you this?" He said, "The Knowing, the Aware has informed me."' Then he turned to her, reproaching her, and said, 'If you two repent to God, your hearts have inclined, but if you support one another against him, then indeed God is his Protector, and Gabriel, and the righteous of the believers,' meaning Abu Bakr and Umar, 'and the angels after that are supporters. Perhaps his Lord, if he divorces you, will give him in exchange wives better than you—Muslim, believing, devout, repentant, worshipping, fasting, previously married and virgins.' He promised him from the previously married: Asiya bt. Muzahim, the wife of Pharaoh, and the sister of Nuh, and from the virgins: Maryam bt. Imran and the sister of Musa (peace be upon them).
