حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ زُهَيْرٍ، قَالَ: نَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: نَا نُوحُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ حَوْشَبِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ
أَنَّ رَجُلًا حَدَّثَ عِنْدَ الْحَسَنِ بِحَدِيثٍ، فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ: " مَنْ حَدَّثَكَ بِهَذَا ؟ " قَالَ: الْفُقَهَاءُ. قَالَ: " وَهَلْ رَأَيْتَ بِعَيْنِكَ فَقِيهًا قَطُّ ؟ " ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَتَدْرِي مَنِ الْفَقِيهُ ؟ الْفَقِيهُ: الزَّاهِدُ فِي الدُّنْيَا، الرَّاغِبُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ، الْبَصِيرُ بِهَذَا الدِّينِ، الْمُتَمَسِّكُ بِالْعِلْمِ
Translation

✧ A man related a hadith in the presence of al-Hasan, and al-Hasan said: “Who told you this?” He said: “The fuqaha'.” He said: “Have you ever seen with your own eyes a true faqih?” Then he said: “Do you know who the faqih is? The faqih is the one who renounces this world, desires the Hereafter, is knowledgeable in this religion, and adheres to knowledge.”
