حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ، قَالَ: نَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: نَا نُوحُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ قَالَ: نَا كَثِيرُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - ﷺ

قَالَ لَهُ: يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عَمْرٍو، كَيْفَ إِذَا بَقِيتَ فِي حُثَالَةٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ قَدْ مَرِجَتْ عُهُودُهُمْ وَأَمَانَاتُهُمْ، وَاخْتَلَفُوا فَصَارُوا هَكَذَا "، وَشَبَّكَ بَيْنَ أَصَابِعِهِ ؟ قَالَ: مَا تَأْمُرُنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: " عَلَيْكَ بِمَا تَعْرِفُ، وَتَدَعُ مَا تُنْكِرُ، وَعَلَيْكَ بِخَاصَّةِ نَفْسِكَ، وَإِيَّاكَ وَعَوَامَّهُمْ

Translation

✧ He said to him: “O ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Amr, how will it be with you when you remain among the dregs of people whose covenants and trusts have become corrupted, and they have differed and become like this,” and he interlaced his fingers? He said: “What do you command me, O Messenger of God?” He said: “Keep to what you know and abandon what you reject; keep to your own self, and beware of their common people.”
