✧ O Allah, make clear to us about wine. So the verse was revealed: 'O you who believe, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated' [up to the end of the verse]. The Prophet ﷺ called Umar and recited this verse to him, but it did not seem to satisfy what Umar wanted. He said: 'O Allah, make clear to us about wine.' Then it was revealed: 'They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: In them is great sin.' The Prophet ﷺ called Umar and recited it to him, but it did not seem to satisfy what he wanted. He said: 'O Allah, make clear to us about wine.' Then it was revealed: 'O you who believe, wine, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are only filth from Satan's work' up to His saying: 'So will you desist?' He recited it to him, and Umar said: 'We desist, O Lord.'
