✧ Qays b. 'Ubad and Ibn al-Kawwa' were with 'Ali b. Abi Talib when they were wounded on the day of Siffin. He said, "For what are we killing ourselves? Let us go to this man and ask him: Was this [practice] in the time of the Prophet ﷺ or is it an opinion he holds?" So we went until we came to him and said, "Our wounds have reached what you see, and we remind you of Allah and Islam. Is this something the Prophet ﷺ entrusted to you, or an opinion you hold?" He said, "What do you want with this?" They said, "We remind you of Allah and Islam," twice or thrice. He said, "Rather, it is an opinion I hold. The Prophet ﷺ did not entrust me with anything regarding it. But 'Uthman was killed, and the people pledged allegiance [to me], and I saw that I have the most right to it." They said to him, "For what do we shed our lifeblood over the opinion of men?" So they sat in their houses.
