✧ When ʿUthman was besieged, he looked down upon them from the top of his house and said: 'I remind you by God, do you know that the Messenger of God ﷺ said regarding the army of hardship: "Who will spend an accepted expenditure?"—while the people were exhausted and in hardship—and I equipped a third of that army from my own wealth?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I remind you by God, do you know about Rumah? No one could drink from it except for a price, so I bought it with my own wealth and made it for the rich, the poor, and the wayfarer?' They said: 'Yes.' And he enumerated other things.

machine translationAbū Isḥāq al-Sabīʿī narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Zayd b. Abī Unaysah, Shuʿbah and ʿAbd al-Kabīr b. Dīnār narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī. Yūnus b. Abī Isḥāq and Isrāʾīl b. Yūnus differed from them, and narrated it from Abū Isḥāq, from Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. The statement of Shuʿbah and those who followed him is closer to the correct view.
