حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ، قَالَ: نَا أَبُو جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ: نَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ: نَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ هُودِ بْنِ عَطَاءٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ شَدَّادًا أَبَا عَمَّارٍ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا أُمَامَةَ يَقُولُ:

جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا يَلْتَمِسُ الْخَيْرَ وَالذِّكْرَ، مَا لَهُ ؟ قَالَ: " لَا شَيْءَ لَهُ " يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، إِنَّ اللهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لَا يَقْبَلُ مِنَ الْعَمَلِ إِلَّا مَا خَلَصَ لَهُ، وَابْتُغِيَ بِهِ

Translation

✧ A man came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of God, what do you think of a man who seeks good and remembrance? What is for him?' He said: 'Nothing for him,' saying that three times. 'Indeed, God, Blessed and Exalted, does not accept any deed except that which is sincere for Him and by which His face is sought.'
