"From al-Ḥārith b. Mālik, who said: I went out to Mecca and met Saʿd b. Mālik, and I said to him: Have you heard of any merit of ʿAlī? He said: I witnessed four things concerning him, any one of which would be dearer to me than the world, were I to live in it as long as Nūḥ lived. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abū Bakr with (Sūrat) Barāʾah to the polytheists of Quraysh, and he travelled with it a day and a night. Then he said to ʿAlī: Catch up with Abū Bakr, take it from him and deliver it. So ʿAlī turned Abū Bakr back, and Abū Bakr returned and said: O Messenger of Allah, has anything been revealed about me? He said: No, only good. No one may convey from me except myself or a man from me, or he said: from my household. He said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the mosque, and it was announced among us at night: Everyone in the mosque must leave except the family of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the family of ʿAlī. So we left [unclear]. When morning came, al-ʿAbbās came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: You have made your uncles and your companions leave, and you have let this youth stay. He said: It was not I who commanded your removal, nor the staying of this youth; rather it is Allah who commanded it. He said: The third is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent ʿUmar and Saʿd to Khaybar. Saʿd went out and ʿUmar returned. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love, in much praise, I fear I may err in some of it. The fourth was the day of Ghadīr Khumm. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and then said: O people! Am I not closer to the believers than themselves? three times. They said: Yes. He said: Come near, O ʿAlī! So he raised his hand, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands until I saw the whiteness of their armpits. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever I am his master, ʿAlī is his master, three times. He said: The fifth of his merits is that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out on his red she-camel and left ʿAlī behind. Quraysh envied him for that and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ found him burdensome and disliked his company. That reached ʿAlī, so he came and took hold of the camel's saddle strap and said: O Messenger of Allah! I will follow you, or he said: I am surely your follower. Quraysh claim that you only left me behind because you found me burdensome and disliked my company. And ʿAlī wept. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called out among the people, and they gathered around him. He said: O people! There is none of you but has [unclear]. Does it not please the son of Abū Ṭālib that you are to me as Hārūn was to Mūsā, except that there is no prophet after me? ʿAlī said: I am pleased with Allah and with His Messenger."
