"Yaʿqūb b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Zuhrī narrated to us: Mūsā b. ʿUqbah narrated to me, he said: This is the sermon of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb on the day of al-Jābiyah: To proceed: I advise you to have fear of God (taqwā), Who remains while everything besides Him perishes, by obedience to Whom His friends are honoured, and by disobedience to Whom His enemies are led astray. For one who perishes has no excuse in a deviation he supposed to be guidance, nor in abandoning a truth he supposed to be misguidance. The most deserving thing a shepherd should take care of in his flock is that he look after them with regard to [what is due to God from him] of the obligations of their religion, to which God has guided them. Our duty is only to command you with what God has commanded you of obedience to Him, and to forbid you from what God has forbidden you of disobedience to Him, and to establish among you the command of God ﷻ regarding people near and far, and we do not care towards whom the truth inclines. I know that some people indulge in wishful thinking about their religion and say: We pray with those who pray, we fight with those who fight, and we lay claim to the emigration (hijrah). All of that is done by people who do not carry it out as it is due. Faith is not adornment. Prayer has a time which God has stipulated, and it is not valid except in it. The time of the dawn prayer is when the night leaves a person and food and drink become forbidden for the fasting person, so give it its share of the Quran. The time of the noon prayer in the heat of summer is [when the sun passes the meridian] until your shadow is like yourself, and that is when the one who goes out at midday goes out. In winter it is when the sun passes the meridian until it is over your right eyebrow, with God's conditions in ablution, bowing and prostration, so that one does not sleep through the prayer. The time of the afternoon prayer is while the sun is white and pure before it turns yellow, about the distance a rider on a heavy camel travels in two farsakhs before sunset. The sunset prayer is when the sun sets and the fasting person breaks his fast. The night prayer is when the night darkens and the redness of the horizon disappears, until a third of the night. Whoever sleeps before that, may God not let his eye sleep,"
