"From al-Walīd b. Abī Mālik: Our companions narrated to us from Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ: that they visited him while he was ill and asked how he had spent the night. His wife said: He spent the night rewarded. He said: I did not spend the night with a reward. Then he said: Will you not ask me about my statement? So they asked him. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever spends an (excess) expenditure () in the cause of Allah, it is seven hundred; and whoever spends on himself and his family, or removes harm (), or visits a sick person, then the good deed is rewarded tenfold. What afflicts you in your body is a shedding of sins, and fasting is a shield as long as one does not tear it."
