وَأَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ, أَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارِ, نَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ, نَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ, نَا شَيْخٌ, عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ شَبِيبٍ, عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ, عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ,
قَالَ: فُقِدَ الْجَرَادُ فِي سَنَةٍ مِنْ سِنِيِّ عُمَرَ الَّتِي وُلِّيَ فِيهَا فَاهْتَمَّ بِذَلِكَ هَمًّا شَدِيدًا فَبَعَثَ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ رَاكِبًا وَرَاكِبًا إِلَى الْعِرَاقِ, وَرَاكِبًا إِلَى الشَّامِ, فَسَأَلَ عَنِ الْجَرَادِ هَلْ رُئِيَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ؟ فَأَتَاهُ الرَّاكِبُ الَّذِي مِنْ قِبَلِ الْيَمَنِ بِقَبْضَةٍ فَنَثَرَهَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ, فَلَمَّا رَآهَا عُمَرُ كَبَّرَ, وَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: " إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ خَلَقَ أَلْفَ أُمَّةٍ سِتَّمِائَةً مِنْهَا فِي الْبَحْرِ, وَأَرْبَعَمِائَةٍ فِي الْبِرِّ, فَإِنَّ أَوَّلَ هَلَاكِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ الْجَرَادُ, فَإِذَا هَلَكَ الْجَرَادُ تَتَابَعَتِ الْأُمَمُ كَنِظَامِ السِّلْكِ ".

When ʿUmar saw it, he said "Allāhu akbar" and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created a thousand nations: six hundred of them in the sea and four hundred on land. The first of these nations to perish is the locust, and when the locust perishes, the nations follow one another like the threads of a string."
