He said: "Kinship of the womb is severed, and likewise blessings are denied. And we have not seen the like of the closeness of hearts. God, Mighty and Majestic, says: {Had you spent all that is on earth, you could not have united their hearts} [al-Anfāl: 63]. And that is found in poetry: [Meter: al-Ṭawīl] If you come to a relative who is bound to you by kinship, and he deceives you and is self-sufficient, then he is not a true kinsman. Rather the true kinsman is the one who, if you call him, answers, and who shoots at the enemy at whom you shoot. And likewise is the saying of the poet: [Meter: al-Kāmil] I have kept company with people, then tested them, and tried the ties by which they connect. I found that kinship does not bring close one who cuts it off, and that affection is the nearest of kinships." Thus I found it joined to the saying of Ibn ʿAbbās, and I do not know whether his words "And that is found in poetry" are his own or the words of one of these narrators who came before.
