He said: It reached al-Ḥasan b. ʿUmārah that al-Aʿmash had spoken ill of him, so he sent him a garment. Later, al-Aʿmash praised him, and it was said to him: You used to criticize him, then you praised him? He said: Khaythamah narrated to me, from ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Hearts are naturally disposed to love whoever does good to them, and to hate whoever does evil to them." Abū Aḥmad b. ʿAdī said: "I have not written it as a raised report (marfūʿ) except from this shaykh, and I do not know of this hadith being raised except through this route, and it is well known from al-Aʿmash as a halted report (mawqūf). He said: Among the ways of drawing close is that some of them show affection to others as much as they can through noble character and various kinds of kindness. It has been narrated to us from al-Nuʿmān b. Bashīr, from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "The likeness of the believers in their mutual affection, mercy and closeness is that of one body: when one limb complains, the rest of the body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever." And it has been narrated to us from Anas b. Mālik that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Do not hate one another, do not envy one another, do not turn away from one another, and be, O servants of Allah, brothers. It is not lawful for a Muslim to forsake his brother for more than three days." And in another narration: "The better of the two is the one who begins with the greeting of peace." The chain of transmission of both hadiths has already been given.
