machine translationAbū ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us, (he said) Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq narrated to us, (he said) Abū ʿUthmān Saʿīd b. ʿUthmān narrated to us, he said: I heard Dhū al-Nūn b. Ibrāhīm, when a man asked him: For one who wants humility, what is the way to it?

So he said to him: "Understand what is being conveyed to you, may God have mercy on you. Whoever wants humility, let him turn himself toward the greatness of God, for then it melts away and becomes small. And whoever looks to the authority of God, the authority of his own self departs, because all selves are lowly before His awe. And among the noblest forms of humility is that the servant not regard himself as anything apart from God. And the meaning of the saying of the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever humbles himself for God, God raises him" — he says: whoever abases himself in neediness and poverty before God, God raises him, meaning by devoting himself entirely to Him."
