I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "Wretched is the servant who is arrogant and transgresses, and forgets the Most High, the Compeller. Wretched is the servant who schemes and struts with pride, and forgets the Great, the Exalted. Wretched is the servant who is heedless and distracted, and forgets the graves and decay. Wretched is the servant who oppresses and rebels, and forgets the beginning and the end. Wretched is the servant who seeks the world by means of religion. Wretched is the servant who seeks religion by means of doubtful matters. Wretched is the servant whom greed leads. Wretched is the servant whom desire leads astray." Abū ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī transmitted it from Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Azdī, from ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, and Hāshim, who is Ibn Saʿīd al-Kūfī, said, and he added to it: "Wretched is the servant whom craving humiliates." "Its chain is not strong, and that was narrated by another weak chain."
