A Bedouin came to Abū Dharr and said: "O Abū Dharr, he has unjustly killed a pilgrim to the House of God. Is there any way out for him?" Abū Dharr said to him: "Woe to you! Are your parents alive?" He said: "No." He said: "Then one of them?" He said: "No." He said: "Had they been alive, or one of them, I would have had hope for you. And I find no way out for you except in one of three things." He said: "Praise be to God. What are they?" He said: "Can you bring him back to life as you killed him?" He said: "No, by God, I cannot bring him back to life." He said: "Can you avoid dying?" He said: "No, by God, there is no escape from death. What is the third?" He said: "Can you seek a tunnel in the earth or a ladder in the sky?" So the man got up, crying out. Abū Hurayrah met him and thought he was a man whose close relative had died, and said: "O servant of God, be patient." He said: "And who are you?" He said: "Abū Hurayrah." He said: "He has unjustly killed a pilgrim to the House of God. Is there repentance for him?" He said: "Woe to you! Are your parents both alive?" He said: "No." He said: "Had they been alive, or one of them, I would have had hope for you. But fight in the way of God and expose yourself to martyrdom; perhaps."
