He said: I asked Bishr, meaning Ibn al-Ḥārith, about a man whose father is at the frontier post and whose mother is in Baghdad. His mother forbids him to go to his father, while his father wants to come to him and also to have him with him. Bishr said: I asked ʿAbdullāh b. Dāwūd about this, and he said: "He should stay with his mother, and should not go to his father unless his mother permits him." I said to Bishr: Yazīd narrated to us from Hishām, from al-Ḥasan, who said: "The mother has two thirds of dutiful kindness, and the father has one third." Bishr said: I heard Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ mention this ḥadīth from Hishām, from al-Ḥasan. I said to him: I narrated it to Bahz b. Ḥakīm, and he said: "This concerns gifts." Bishr said: "I hold that the father may take from his son's wealth, when he is in need, what suffices him, and the mother likewise takes according to what she needs." And he said: "The father and the mother are equal in this, but as for staying, I lean more towards the mother."
