أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، نا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ الْحَنَّاطُ، نا ابْنُ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيِّ، نا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْأَنْطَاكِيُّ
قَالَ: قَالَ هَارُونُ الرَّشِيدُ لِسُفْيَانَ: أُحِبُّ أَنْ أَرَى الْفُضَيْلَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَذْهَبُ بِكَ إِلَيْهِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ سُفْيَانُ عَلَى فُضَيْلٍ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: " مَنْ هَذَا؟ " قَالَ: قُولُوا لَهُ: هَذَا سُفْيَانُ، فَقَالَ: " قُولُوا لَهُ: يَدْخُلُ "، فَقَالَ: وَمَنْ مَعِي؟ قَالَ: " وَمَنْ مَعَكَ " فَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ لَهُ سُفْيَانُ: يَا أَبَا عَلِيٍّ، هَذَا أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَقَالَ: " وَإِنَّكَ لَهُوَ يَا جَمِيلَ الْوَجْهِ، أَنْتَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بَيْنَ اللهِ وَبَيْنَ خَلْقِهِ أَحَدٌ غَيْرَكَ؟ أَنْتَ الَّذِي يُسْأَلُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ كُلُّ إِنْسَانٍ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ وَتُسْأَلُ أَنْتَ عَنْ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ " قَالَ: فَبَكَى هَارُونُ

When they entered upon him, Sufyān said to him: "O Abū ʿAlī, this is the Commander of the Believers." He said: "So it is you, O fair of face! You are the one between whom and God there is no one among His creation except you? You are the one who will be asked on the Day of Resurrection, while every person is asked about himself, and you are asked about this nation." He said: So Hārūn wept.
