He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ addressed us on the Day of Sacrifice and said: "The first thing we begin with on this day of ours is that we pray, then return and sacrifice. Whoever does that has met our Sunnah. And whoever slaughters before he prays, it is only meat he has hastened for his family, and it is not part of the rite of sacrifice at all." Abū Burdah said: "A jadhaʿah (young sheep) that I have is better than a musinnah (a full-grown one); may I make it take its place?" He said: "Slaughter it, but it will not suffice for anyone after you." He said: And Abū Muslim narrated to us, Ḥajjāj b. al-Minhāl narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us with his chain of transmission, similar to it.

Notes
machine translationAl-Bukhārī narrated it in the Ṣaḥīḥ, from Sulaymān b. Ḥarb and Ḥajjāj b. Minhāl. He also reported it by another route from Shuʿbah. Imam Aḥmad said: "God, Mighty and Majestic, commanded His close friend Ibrāhīm, peace be upon him, to sacrifice his son. When he resolved to do so, He ransomed him with a great sacrifice. So it is established that drawing near to God, Mighty and Majestic, by shedding blood for His sake is the Sunnah of the prophets, God's blessings be upon them, and that it is among the things in which we were commanded to follow them, as [unclear]"
