Marwān said: "Go, O Rāfiʿ, to Ibn ʿAbbās and say: If every one of us who rejoices in what he has done, and loves to be praised for what he has not done, is to be punished, then we will all be punished." Ibn ʿAbbās said: "What do you have to do with this verse? It was only revealed about the People of the Book." Then Ibn ʿAbbās recited {وَإِذْ أَخَذَ اللهُ مِيثَاقَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ} [Āl ʿImrān: 187], the verse. Then Ibn ʿAbbās said: "The Prophet ﷺ asked them about something and they concealed it and told him something else, and they showed him that they had informed him of what he had asked them about, and they sought his praise for that, and they rejoiced in what they had been given of concealing from him what he asked them about." The two (shaykhs) transmitted it in the Ṣaḥīḥ.
