Chain of narrators

machine translationAbū ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us: al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq informed us: Abū ʿUthmān al-Ḥannāṭ narrated to us, he said: I heard Dhū al-Nūn

Machine translation, not reviewed

He said: "Beware of being a claimant to gnosis (maʿrifah), or a professional of renunciation (zuhd), or one attached to worship." It was said to him: "Explain that to us, may God have mercy on him." So he said: "Do you not know that when you point to yourself, in gnosis, with things whose realities you are stripped of, you are a claimant? And when you are described in renunciation by a state while you are below those states, you are a professional? And when you attach your heart to worship, and think that you will be saved from God Almighty by worship, not by God in worship, you are attached to worship and not to its Guardian, the One who has bestowed it upon you?"
