أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، أَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَلْمَانَ الْفَقِيهُ،
قَالَ: قُرِئَ عَلَى يَحْيَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ: أَنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ، أَنَا الْمُثَنَّى بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، قَالَ: ذُكِرَ رَجُلٌ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالُوا: مَا أَعْجَزَهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: " اغْتَبْتُمُ الرَّجُلَ " قَالُوا: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا قُلْنَا إِلَّا مَا فِيهِ. قَالَ: " لَوْ قُلْتُمْ مَا لَيْسَ فِيهِ فَقَدْ بَهَتُّمُوهُ "

He said: It was read to Yaḥyā b. Jaʿfar, who said: ʿAlī b. ʿĀṣim informed us, Al-Muthannā b. al-Ṣabbāḥ informed us, from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, from Muʿādh b. Jabal, who said: A man was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ, and they said: "How incapable he is!" So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You have backbitten the man." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we said only what is in him." He said: "If you had said what is not in him, you would have slandered him."
