He said: "God has made eating and drinking lawful, so long as it is not extravagance or arrogance." And we have narrated from ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, from the Prophet ﷺ, that he said: "Eat, drink, dress, and give charity, without extravagance or arrogance." Al-Ḥalīmī, may God have mercy on him, said: "And it has come regarding moderation in spending that the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade that walls be covered." The Shaykh said: We have narrated this from al-Thawrī, from Ḥakīm b. Jubayr, from ʿAlī b. Ḥusayn, from the Prophet ﷺ as a mursal report, and we have narrated it from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, from Ibn ʿAbbās, both connected and mursal. And we narrated before this in the authentic hadith from ʿĀʾishah: that she took a patterned cloth to hang over the door, and when he arrived and saw the cloth, she recognized the dislike on his face, so he pulled it until he tore it down or cut it, and said: "Indeed God has not commanded us to clothe stones and clay."
