He said: Three verses were revealed about wine. The first thing that was revealed was: {يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ} [al-Baqarah: 219], the verse. So it was said: Wine has been prohibited. Then it was said: O Messenger of God, leave us to benefit from it as God, the Mighty and Majestic, said. So he was silent about them. Then this verse was revealed: {لَا تَقْرَبُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنْتُمْ سُكَارَى} [al-Nisāʾ: 43]. So it was said: Wine itself has been prohibited. They said: O Messenger of God, we do not drink it near the time of prayer. So he was silent about them. Then it was revealed: {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالْأَنْصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ} [al-Māʾidah: 90], the verse. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Wine has been prohibited." He said: I had brought for a man a skin of wine from Syria, or a carrier of it. So the Prophet ﷺ, Abū Bakr and ʿUmar got up, and I only know that ʿUthmān was with them, and they came to the man. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Leave it to us, we will slit them." He said: O Messenger of God, shall we not sell it? The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "God has cursed wine, and cursed its planter, its drinker, its presser, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who passes it around, its server, its carrier, the one who consumes its price, and its seller."
