From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that he said: "Some people of my nation will drink wine, calling it by other than its name, while musical instruments are played over their heads. Allah will cause the earth to swallow them, and will turn some of them into monkeys and pigs." And we have narrated something to this effect from ʿAṭiyyah b. Qays, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ghanm, from Abū ʿĀmir or Abū Mālik, from the Prophet ﷺ: "There will be among my nation people who will deem lawful silk, wine and musical instruments." Then he mentioned what will befall some of them of abhorrence, and what will befall some of them of transformation (into animals). And al-Bukhārī related it in the Ṣaḥīḥ by that route. We have narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: "Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has forbidden to you wine, gambling and the kūbah" – which is the drum. This was also narrated in the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr, who added in it al-matn, which is the lute. Ibn al-Aʿrābī said: "Al-taʿnīn is playing the ʿinnīn, which is the ṭunbūr in Abyssinian." And we have narrated from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr, as his own statement: "Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, sent down the truth to do away with falsehood by it, and to nullify play by it, and charms, pipes, mizhars and kinnārāt. The mizhars are the lutes that are struck, and it is said that the kinnārāt are the frame drums." Ibn al-Aʿrābī said: "It is said of the kūbah: it is the drum; and it is said: it is backgammon; and it is said: it is the barbaṭ (lute). That is from what I read in the book al-Gharībayn."
