He said: I was with ʿUmar (may God be pleased with him), and his Companions were with him, and he asked them, saying: "What do you think of the saying of the Messenger of God ﷺ about the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr): 'Seek it in the last ten nights, on the odd nights, whichever night you see it'?" Some of them said: the twenty-first night. Some of them said: the twenty-third night. Some of them said: the twenty-fifth night. And some of them said: the twenty-seventh night. They spoke while I was silent. He said: "What is the matter with you, that you do not speak?" I said: "You commanded me not to speak until they had spoken." He said: "I only sent for you so that you would speak." He said: So I said: I heard God mention the number seven, and He mentioned: {seven heavens and of the earth the like of them}; and He created man from seven, and the growth of the earth is seven. ʿUmar said: "This you have told me is what I already know. What do you say about what I do not know: what is your saying, 'the growth of the earth is seven'?" He said: I said: God, Mighty and Majestic, said: {Then We split the earth, splitting it open, and caused to grow therein grain, and grapes, and fresh vegetation, and olives, and palm trees, and dense gardens, and fruit and fodder} [ʿAbasa: 27]. He said: "The dense gardens are the walled orchards of palms and trees; and 'fruit and fodder' (abb): the abb is what the earth grows that the beasts and livestock eat and people do not eat." Then ʿUmar said to his Companions: "Were you unable to say what this boy said, whose head's sutures have not yet joined? By God, I see the matter as you have said." Imam Aḥmad, may God have mercy on him, said: "This too he said only as an inference." ʿIkrimah has also narrated this story from Ibn ʿAbbās, and said in it: "I think I know which night it is." He said: "And which night is it?" He said: "The seventh that passes or the seventh that remains of the last ten." ʿUmar said: "And how do you know?" He said: I said: God created seven heavens, and seven earths, and seven days, and time revolves in sevens; man was created from seven, and eats from seven, and prostrates on seven limbs; the circumambulation is seven, and the stoning of the pillars is seven,
