He says: We had with us in the ribāṭ an old man who would wake the companions when a third of the night had passed and encourage them to rise for the night prayer (tahajjud). When he saw eagerness and haste in them, he praised Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and recited verses from the Qur'an, such as His saying, Mighty and Majestic: {وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَكَ} [al-Isrā': 79]. Then he would raise his voice and say: Ask the night, the people of the night, at the hour before dawn... and those who stand in prayer without idle play and without sleeplessness, Those who clasp their hands over their livers... tighten the departure and prepare for the journey. And when he saw heaviness and laziness in them, he would say: "Whoever sleeps much of the night will meet Allah on the Day of Resurrection poor." Then he would raise his voice and say: [Meter: al-Wāfir] Wake up from your sleep, O ignorant one... for your sleep beneath your grave may be long. Prepare for death when you set out in the morning... perhaps by evening the messenger will have come down.
