So he mentioned it. Al-Ḥalīmī, may God have mercy on him, said: "God, Mighty and Majestic, has informed through the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ that He will annihilate everything on the earth, and will replace the earth with other than the earth; that the sun will be wrapped up, the seas will be set aflame, the stars will be scattered, and the sky will split apart and become like molten brass, then be rolled up as a scroll is rolled up; that the mountains will become like carded wool, and God will blow them away completely and leave them a level plain, in which you will see no crookedness and no unevenness. All of that will come to pass as the report has come, and God's promise is true, and His word is the truth." He said: "The Hour, whose mention is repeated in the Quran, has two senses: one is the last hour of the hours of this world. God, Mighty and Majestic, said: {يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا} [al-Aʿrāf: 187]. This refers to the final hour, because of His saying: {لَا تَأْتِيكُمْ إِلَّا بَغْتَةً} [al-Aʿrāf: 187]. Likewise His saying: {وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّ السَّاعَةَ تَكُونُ قَرِيبًا} [al-Aḥzāb: 63]. The other is the first hour of the hours of the Hereafter. God, Mighty and Majestic, said: {وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ} [al-Rūm: 55], meaning when those in the graves are raised, because of His saying: {يُقْسِمُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ مَا لَبِثُوا غَيْرَ سَاعَةٍ} [al-Rūm: 55]. Likewise His saying: {وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ أَدْخِلُوا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ أَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِ} [Ghāfir: 46]." Al-Bayhaqī, may God have mercy on him, said: "The Quran has declared that the Prophet ﷺ did not know when the Hour would come, and none of God's creation knows. The saying of the Prophet ﷺ: 'I was sent, I and the Hour, like these two' means, and God Most High knows best, that I am the last prophet, no other prophet follows me, and only the Resurrection follows me; and it is nevertheless near, because its signs follow one another between me and it, though the span from the first of its signs to the last is not known. We have mentioned in the Book of Resurrection and Revival the reports that have come about its signs, which makes repeating them here unnecessary." And we have narrated from Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah, from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, the Hour will certainly come while two men have spread a garment between them, neither selling it nor folding it; and the Hour will certainly come while a man is plastering his basin and does not water from it; and the Hour will certainly come when a man has taken away the milk of his she-camel from beneath her and does not drink it; and he has raised his morsel to his mouth and does not eat it."
