He said: Abū Hurayrah used to narrate that a man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: "I saw a cloud of shade from which clarified butter and honey were dripping, and I saw the people scooping it up in their hands, some taking much and some taking little. And I saw a rope connecting the sky to the earth, and I saw you, O Messenger of Allah, take hold of it and ascend. Then another man took hold of it and ascended. Then another man took hold of it and ascended. Then another man took hold of it and it broke, then it was reconnected for him and he ascended." Abū Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be your ransom, will you let me interpret it?" He said: "Interpret it." He said: "As for the cloud of shade, it is the shade of Islam. As for the dripping - and in the narration of Ibn Isḥāq: As for what dripped of clarified butter and honey, it is the Qur'an, its gentleness and its sweetness. As for the one taking much and the one taking little, they are the one who takes much of the Qur'an and the one who takes little of it. As for the rope connecting the sky to the earth, it is the truth upon which you stand; you hold to it and Allah raises you high. Then after you another man will take hold of it and ascend by it. Then another after him will take hold of it and ascend by it. Then another man will take hold of it and it will break, then it will be reconnected for him and he will ascend. O Messenger of Allah, will you tell me, did I get it right or wrong?" He said: "You got some right and some wrong." He said: "I swear by my father and mother, O Messenger of Allah, you must tell me what I got wrong." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not swear."
