He said: ʿAlī addressed the people in Kufa, and I heard him say in his sermon: "O people, whoever feigns poverty becomes poor, and whoever is granted a long life is tested, and whoever does not prepare for affliction when he is afflicted will not be patient, and whoever gains power monopolizes, and whoever does not seek counsel will regret." And after these words he would say: "It is near that nothing of Islam will remain except its name, and nothing of the Qur'an except its script." And he would say: "Let no man be ashamed, when he is asked about what he does not know, to say: I do not know. Your mosques on that day will be flourishing, while your hearts and your bodies will be ruined by desire. The worst of those under the shade of the sky will be your jurists; from them the trial begins, and to them it returns." A man stood and said: "When, O Commander of the Believers?" He said: "When knowledge of the law is among your lowest, and indecency among their best, and sovereignty is in your youngest, then at that time the Hour will come." "This is mawqūf (halted at the Companion); its chain of transmission up to Sharīk contains an unknown person, and the first is interrupted (munqaṭiʿ), and God knows best."
