He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "People are like mines; the best of them in the Jāhiliyyah are the best of them in Islam, if they gain understanding (of the religion)." "Ibn ʿAwn differed from him and made it mawqūf (a statement of the Companion)." And we have narrated in the authentic hadith from Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "Whoever Allah wishes good for, He gives him understanding of the religion." And from Saʿd and Ḥudhayfah, from the Prophet ﷺ: "The excess of knowledge is more beloved to me - or he said: better - than the excess of worship, and the best of your religion is scrupulousness (wara')." "And we have narrated it authentically as a saying of Muṭarrif b. ʿAbdillāh b. al-Shikhkhīr." And we have narrated from ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAmr that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "A little understanding is better than much worship, and it is enough for a man to have understanding if he worships Allah."
