He said: Abū Bakr b. Abī Dārim, the ḥāfiẓ, counted them on my hands in Kufa. He said: ʿAlī b. Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī counted them on my hands, and he said to me: Ḥarb b. al-Ḥasan al-Ṭaḥḥān counted them on my hands, and he said to me: Yaḥyā b. al-Musāwir al-Ḥannāṭ counted them on my hands, and he said to me: ʿAmr b. Khālid counted them on my hands, and Imam Aḥmad counted them on the hands of those who heard from him. (Transition to another chain.) He said: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī narrated to us, and he counted them on my hands: Abū al-Mufaḍḍal Muḥammad b. ʿAbdullāh al-Shaybānī informed us in Kufa, and he counted them on my hands: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan b. Kās informed us in Ramla, and he counted them on my hands: my paternal grandfather Sulaymān b. Ibrāhīm b. ʿUbayd al-Muḥāribī narrated to us, and he counted them on my hands: Naṣr b. Muzāḥim al-Minqarī narrated to us, and he counted them on my hands: Ibrāhīm b. al-Zibriqān narrated to us, and he counted them on my hands: Abū Khālid ʿAmr b. Khālid narrated to us, and he counted them on my hands. He said to me: Zayd b. ʿAlī counted them on my hands, and he said to me: my father ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn counted them on my hands, and he said to me: my father al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī counted them on my hands, and he said to me: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib counted them on my hands. He said to me: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ counted them on my hands, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Jibrīl, peace be upon him, counted them on my hands, and Jibrīl said: Thus they were sent down from the Lord of Might: O Allah, send prayers upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You sent prayers upon Ibrāhīm and upon the family of Ibrāhīm; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You blessed Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, and have mercy upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad, as You had mercy upon Ibrāhīm and upon the family of Ibrāhīm; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, and show tenderness to Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You showed tenderness to Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, and grant peace to Muḥammad and the family of Muḥammad, as You granted peace to Ibrāhīm and the family of Ibrāhīm; You are Praiseworthy, Glorious." Abū ʿAbdullāh added in his narration: Ḥarb closed five of his fingers, ʿAlī b. Aḥmad al-ʿIjlī closed five of his fingers, and our shaykh Abū Bakr closed five of his fingers. Al-Bayhaqī, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "And our shaykh Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān closed five of his fingers. Thus this ḥadīth reached us, and it is a weak (ḍaʿīf) chain. As for blessing (mubārakah), it is the favour of Allah, Exalted is His majesty, and what comes from us is this invocation of blessing, which is that we say: O Allah, bless Muḥammad. The root of blessing (barakah) is permanence, and it is from 'the camel knelt (baraka)' when it is made to kneel in a place and stays there. It is also used for growth and increase, and its root is what we mentioned, because the increase of a thing necessitates its permanence. It is also used for good fortune, so the fortunate one is called mubārak, meaning he is beloved and desired. That does not contradict what we said, because when permanence is intended by blessing, it is used only for what is wanted and whose continuance is desired. So when we say: O Allah, bless Muḥammad, the meaning is: O Allah, make the remembrance of Muḥammad, his call and his law permanent, multiply his followers and supporters, and make his community know, through his good fortune and happiness, that You will grant him intercession for them, admit them into Your gardens and settle them in the abode of Your pleasure. So the invocation of blessing upon him combines permanence, increase and happiness. And Allah knows best."
