He said: When Ḥudhayfah al-Marʿashī, Sulaymān al-Khawwāṣ, and Yūsuf b. Asbāṭ gathered, they discussed poverty and wealth, while Sulaymān remained silent. Some of them said: The rich person is the one who has a house that shelters him, a garment that covers him, and a sufficiency of livelihood that keeps him from the excesses of the world. Others said: The rich person is the one who has no need of people. Then Sulaymān was asked: What do you say, O Abū Ayyūb? He wept, then said: "I have seen that the sum of wealth lies in reliance on God (tawakkul), and I have seen that the sum of evil lies in despair. The truly rich person is the one who settles his heart in God: from his wealth, certainty; from his knowledge of Him, reliance; and from His giving and His apportioning, contentment. Such a person is truly rich, even if he spends the evening hungry and the morning in need." So all the people wept at his words.
