أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ عَنْ زَائِدَةَ عَنْ شَبِيبِ بْنِ غَرْقَدَةَ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْأَحْوَصِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي
أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ اسْتَوْصُوا بِالنِّسَاءِ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّمَا هُنَّ عَوَانٌ عِنْدَكُمْ لَيْسَ تَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُنَّ شَيْئًا غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ {إِلَّا أَنْ يَأْتِينَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ مُبَيِّنَةٍ} [النساء 19] فَإِنْ فَعَلْنَ فَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ ضَرْبًا غَيْرَ مُبَرِّحٍ فَإِنْ أَطَعْنَكُمْ فَلَا تَبْغُوا عَلَيْهِنَّ سَبِيلًا إِلَّا إِنَّ لَكُمْ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ حَقًّا وَلِنِسَائِكُمْ عَلَيْكُمْ حَقٌّ فَأَمَّا حَقُّكُمْ عَلَى نِسَائِكُمْ فَلَا يُوطِئْنَ فُرُشَكُمْ مَنْ تَكْرَهُونَ وَلَا يَأْذَنَّ فِي بُيُوتِكُمْ لِمَنْ تَكْرَهُونَ أَلَا وَحَقُّهُنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ تُحْسِنُوا إِلَيْهِنَّ فِي كِسْوَتِهِنَّ وَطَعَامِهِنَّ
Translation

✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Treat women well, for they are like captives in your hands; you do not possess anything from them beyond that, except if they commit clear immorality {illā an ya'tīna bifāḥishatin mubayyinatin} [Qur'an 4:19]. If they do so, then shun them in bed and strike them with a strike that is not severe. If they obey you, then do not seek a way against them. Indeed, you have rights over your wives, and your wives have rights over you. As for your rights over your wives: they should not allow anyone you dislike to sit on your beds, nor permit anyone you dislike to enter your houses. And their rights over you are that you treat them kindly in their clothing and food.”
