✧ Al-Zubayr married me while he had no wealth on earth, no slave, and nothing except his horse. I used to feed his horse, take care of its needs, tend it, grind date pits for his camel, feed it, draw water, stitch its bucket, and knead dough. I was not good at baking, so some of my Ansari neighbors, who were truthful women, used to bake for me. I used to carry date pits from al-Zubayr's land, which the Prophet ﷺ had allotted to him, on my head, a distance of two-thirds of a farsakh. One day I came with the date pits on my head, and the Prophet ﷺ met me with a group of his companions. He called me, then said: “Ikh, ikh,” to make me ride behind him. I felt shy to walk with the men, and I remembered al-Zubayr and his jealousy; he was one of the most jealous of people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ realized that I was shy, so he went on. I came to al-Zubayr and said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me with the date pits on my head, and with him was a group of his companions. He made his camel kneel so I could ride with him, but I felt shy and knew your jealousy.” He said: “By Allah, your carrying the date pits was harder on me than your riding with him.” She said: “Then Abu Bakr sent me a servant after that, who took care of the horse for me, and it was as if he had freed me.”
