Morning Adhkar After Waking Up

Show the chain

Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAbdullāh b. Maslamah
  2. Abū Mawdūd ʿAmman
  3. Abān b. ʿUthmān
  4. ʿUthmān / Ibn ʿAffān
  5. Rasūl Allāh ﷺ

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Whoever says, bismi allāhi alladhī lā yaḍurru maʿa ismihī shayʾun fī al-arḍi wa-lā fī al-samāʾi wa-huwa al-samīʿu al-ʿalīm In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, three times, no sudden affliction will befall him until morning; and whoever says it when morning comes, three times, no sudden affliction will befall him until evening.” Then Aban ibn ‘Uthman was struck with paralysis, and the man who had heard the hadith from him began looking at him. So he said to him, “Why are you looking at me? By Allah, I did not lie against ‘Uthman, nor did ‘Uthman lie against the Prophet ﷺ ; but on the day when what befell me befell me, I became angry and forgot to say it.”

machine translationThis is a mistake, and the correct one is what al-Qaʿnabī narrated to us, he said: Abū Mawdūd narrated to us from a man, he said: one who heard Abān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān narrated to us, saying: I heard ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say... and he mentioned the hadith.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAbū Mawdūd ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Sulaymān narrated it from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, and there is disagreement about him. Abū Ḍamrah narrated it from Abū Mawdūd, from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb, from Abān b. ʿUthmān, from ʿUthmān, and Khālid b. Yazīd al-ʿUmarī followed him. Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb differed from them and narrated it from Abū Mawdūd, who said: one who heard Abān narrated to me, without naming anyone. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī and Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqadī differed from them, and narrated it from Abū Mawdūd, who said: a man narrated to me from one who heard Abān b. ʿUthmān, from ʿUthmān. This last version is the one preserved from Abū Mawdūd, and whoever said in it "from Muḥammad b. Kaʿb al-Quraẓī" has made an error. This was said by Abū Ḍamrah Anas b. ʿIyāḍ. Al-Ḥusayn b. Ismāʿīl and others narrated to us from al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, from Abū Ḍamrah. Abū al-Zinād also narrated this hadith from Abān b. ʿUthmān, from his father; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Zinād narrated it from his father. This is connected (muttaṣil), and it is the best of them in chain.
