أَخْبَرَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو الزَّاهِرِيَّةِ حُدَيْرُ بْنُ كُرَيْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي كَثِيرُ بْنُ مُرَّةَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ
عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ أَفِي كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ قِرَاءَةٌ؟ قَالَ «نَعَمْ» قَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ وَجَبَتْ هَذِهِ فَالْتَفَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيَّ وَكُنْتُ أَقْرَبَ الْقَوْمِ مِنْهُ فَقَالَ «مَا أَرَى الْإِمَامَ إِذَا أَمَّ الْقَوْمَ إِلَّا قَدْ كَفَاهُمْ» قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ خُولِفَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ فَالْتَفَتَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَيَّ

✧ From Abu al-Darda', I heard him say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, “Is there recitation in every prayer?” He said: “Yes.” A man from the Ansar said: “This has become obligatory.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to me—and I was the closest of the people to him—and said: “I do not consider the imam, when he leads the people, except that he has sufficed them.” Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Zayd b. Hubab was contradicted in his saying “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to me.”
