✧ Prohibition of wearing revealing clothing

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ

أَنَّهُ رَأَى حُلَّةً سِيَرَاءَ تُبَاعُ عِنْدَ بَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ لَوِ اشْتَرَيْتَهَا لِيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلِلْوَفْدِ إِذَا قَدِمُوا عَلَيْكَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّمَا يَلْبَسُ هَذِهِ مَنْ لَا خَلَاقَ لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ» قَالَ فَأَتَى رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بَعْدُ مِنْهَا حُلَلٌ فَكَسَانِي مِنْهَا حُلَّةً فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَسَوْتَنِيهَا وَقَدْ قُلْتَ فِيهَا مَا قُلْتَ قَالَ «إِنِّي لَمْ أَكْسُكَهَا لِتَلْبَسَهَا إِنَّمَا كَسَوْتُكَهَا لِتَكْسُوَهَا أَوْ لِتَبِيعَهَا» فَكَسَاهَا عُمَرُ أَخًا لَهُ مِنْ أُمَّهِ مُشْرِكًا خَالَفَهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ نَجِيحٍ رَوَاهُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ رَأَى حُلَّةً

Translation

✧ He saw a striped silk garment being sold at the gate of the mosque, so I said, "O Messenger of Allah, if only you would buy it for Friday and for the delegations when they come to you." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Only one who has no share in the Hereafter wears this." He said: Later, some garments of that kind were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he clothed me with one of them. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have clothed me with it while you said about it what you said." He said, "I did not clothe you with it so that you would wear it. I clothed you with it so that you could clothe someone else with it or sell it." So Umar clothed a half-brother of his, a polytheist, with it. Muhammad b. Abd al-Rahman b. Najih disagreed with him; he narrated from Nafi' from Ibn Umar that Umar saw a garment.
