✧ Prohibition of gold for men

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَسْبَاطٌ عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ عَنْ مَطَرٍ عَنْ أَبِي شَيْخٍ قَالَ

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ فِي بَعْضِ حَجَّاتِهِ إِذْ جَمَعَ رَهْطًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ «أَلَسْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ» نَهَى عَنْ لُبْسِ الذَّهَبِ إِلَّا مُقَطَّعًا؟ قَالُوا «اللهُمَّ نَعَمْ» خَالَفَهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ عَلَى اخْتِلَافٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ عَلَيْهِ فِيهِ

✧ While we were with Mu'awiyah during one of his pilgrimages, he gathered a party of the companions of Muhammad ﷺ and said to them, "Do you not know that the Messenger of God ﷺ forbade wearing gold except as small pieces?" They said, "O God, yes." Yahya b. Abi Kathir disagreed with him, with his companions differing about it.
