أَخْبَرَنِي مَحْمُودُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ عَنْ مَرْوَانَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ سَلَامٍ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَخِي أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ جَدَّهُ أَبَا سَلَامٍ يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو أَسْمَاءَ الرَّحَبِيُّ عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ قَالَ

كُنْتُ قَاعِدًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَتَاهُ حَبْرٌ مِنْ أَحْبَارِ الْيَهُودِ فَقَالَ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مُحَمَّدُ قَالَ فَدَفَعْتُهُ حَتَّى صَرَعْتُهُ فَقَالَ لِمَ دَفَعْتَنِي؟ قُلْتُ أَلَا تَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ الْيَهُودِيُّ أَنَا أُسَمِّيهِ بِالِاسْمِ الَّذِي سَمَّاهُ بِهِ أَهْلُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَجَلْ أَهْلِي سَمُّونِي مُحَمَّدًا» قَالَ جِئْتُ لِأَسْأَلَ قَالَ «فَيَنْفَعُكَ إِنْ أَخْبَرْتُكَ» فَقَالَ أَسْمَعُ بِأُذُنِي فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «سَلْ عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ» فَقَالَ الْيَهُودِيُّ أَرَأَيْتَ إِذَا بُدِّلَتِ السَّمَوَاتُ غَيْرَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضُ غَيْرَ الْأَرْضِ أَيْنَ يَكُونُ النَّاسُ؟ قَالَ «فِي الظُّلْمَةِ دُونَ الْجَسْرُ» قَالَ فَمَنْ أَوَّلُ النَّاسِ أَجَازَهُ اللهُ؟ قَالَ «فُقَرَاءُ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ» قَالَ فَأَيُّ شَيْءٍ يُتْحَفُ بِهَا أَهْلُ الْجَنَّةِ؟ قَالَ «زَائِدَةُ كَبِدِ نُونٍ» قَالَ فَمَا غِذَاؤُهُمْ عَلَى إِثْرِ ذَلِكَ؟ قَالَ «يُنْحَرُ لَهُمْ ثَوْرُ الْجَنَّةِ الَّذِي كَانَ يَأْكُلُ مِنْ أَطْرَافِهَا» قَالَ فَمَا شَرَابُهُمْ؟ قَالَ «مِنْ عَيْنٍ تُسَمَّى سَلْسَبِيلَا» قَالَ صَدَقْتَ قَالَ الْيَهُودِيُّ أَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ وَاحِدَةٍ لَا يَعْلَمُهَا إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ أَوْ رَجُلٌ أَوْ رَجُلَانِ قَالَ هَلْ يَنْفَعُكَ إِنْ أَخْبَرْتُكَ؟ قَالَ أَسْمَعُ بِأُذُنِي قَالَ «سَلْ عَمَّا بَدَا لَكَ» قَالَ مِنْ أَيْنَ يَكُونُ شَبَهُ الْوَلَدِ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِنَّ مَاءَ الرَّجُلِ غَلِيظٌ أَبْيَضُ وَمَاءُ الْمَرْأَةِ أَصْفَرُ رَقِيقٌ فَإِنْ عَلَا مَاءُ الرَّجُلِ مَاءَ الْمَرْأَةِ أَذْكَرَ بِإِذْنِ اللهِ وَإِنْ عَلَا مَاءُ الْمَرْأَةِ مَاءَ الرَّجُلِ أَنَّثَ بِإِذْنِ اللهِ» قَالَ صَدَقْتَ وَأَنْتَ نَبِيٌّ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ «لَقَدْ سَأَلَنِي حِينَ سَأَلَنِي وَمَا عِنْدِي عِلْمٌ حَتَّى أَنْبَأَنِي اللهُ بِهِ»

✧ I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a rabbi from the Jewish rabbis came to him and said, “Peace be upon you, O Muhammad.” He said, “I pushed him until I threw him down.” He said, “Why did you push me?” I said, “Will you not say, ‘O Messenger of Allah’?” The Jew said, “I call him by the name his family called him.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Indeed, my family named me Muhammad.” He said, “I have come to ask.” He said, “It will benefit you if I tell you.” He said, “I will listen with my ears.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Ask whatever you like.” The Jew said, “What do you think—when the heavens are replaced with other than the heavens and the earth with other than the earth, where will the people be?” He said, “In darkness before the bridge.” He said, “Who will be the first of people whom Allah will allow to cross?” He said, “The poor among the emigrants.” He said, “What will the people of Paradise be given as a gift?” He said, “The extra lobe of the fish’s liver.” He said, “What is their food after that?” He said, “The bull of Paradise that used to eat from its edges will be slaughtered for them.” He said, “What is their drink?” He said, “From a spring called Salsabil.” He said, “You have spoken the truth.” The Jew said, “I ask you about one thing that none knows except a prophet or a man or two men.” He said, “Will it benefit you if I tell you?” He said, “I will listen with my ears.” He said, “Ask whatever you like.” He said, “From where does the child’s resemblance come?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The man’s fluid is thick and white, and the woman’s fluid is yellow and thin. If the man’s fluid prevails over the woman’s fluid, the child is male by Allah’s permission; and if the woman’s fluid prevails over the man’s fluid, the child is female by Allah’s permission.” He said, “You have spoken the truth, and you are a prophet.” Then he went away. The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, “He asked me when he asked me while I had no knowledge until Allah informed me.”
