✧ She said: “Shall I not tell you about myself and the Prophet ﷺ?” We said: “Yes.” She said: “When it was my night on which he was with me—meaning the Prophet ﷺ—he turned in, placed his sandals at his feet, laid down his cloak, and spread the edge of his lower garment over his bed. He did not wait except as long as it took to think that I had gone to sleep. Then he put on his sandals slowly, took his cloak slowly, then opened the door slowly and went out, and closed it slowly. I put my shift over my head, veiled myself, and wrapped myself in my lower garment, and I set out following his tracks. He came to al-Baqi‘, raised his hands three times, and stood for a long time. Then he turned away and I turned away. He quickened his pace and I quickened mine. He ran and I ran. He hurried and I hurried, and I got ahead of him and entered, and no sooner had I lain down than he entered.” He said: “What is the matter with you, O ‘A’ishah, panting and out of breath?” She said: “No.” He said: “You will either tell me or the Most Subtle, the All-Aware will tell me.” I said: “O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you,” and I told him the news. He said: “So you are the dark figure I saw in front of me.” She said: “Yes.” He struck me a blow on my chest that hurt me. Then he said: “Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would wrong you?” She said: “Whatever people conceal, Allah knows it.” He said: “Yes, for Jibril came to me when you saw me, and he had not been entering upon you because you had taken off your clothes. He called me but concealed it from you, and I answered him but concealed it from you, and I thought that you had gone to sleep. I disliked waking you and feared that you would feel lonely. He commanded me to go to the people of al-Baqi‘ and ask forgiveness for them.” Abu ‘Abd al-Rahman said: “Hajjaj b. Muhammad is more reliable in our view than Ibn Wahb in narrating from Ibn Jurayj. ‘Asim narrated it from ‘Abd Allah b. ‘Amir b. Rabi‘ah from ‘A’ishah with a different wording.”
