✧ I heard movement beneath his bed in his house, and there was a snake. I got up to kill it, but Abu Sa'id gestured to me, "Sit." So I sat. When he finished, he pointed to a room in the house and said, "Do you see this room?" I said, "Yes." He said, "There was a young man among us who had recently married. We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the Trench. That young man used to ask permission at midday to check on his family. One day he asked the Prophet ﷺ for permission, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Take your weapon, for I fear the Qurayza for you.' So the man took his weapon and went. When he came to his wife standing between the two doors, jealousy seized him, and he raised the spear to thrust at her. She said, 'Hold your spear until you see what is in your house.' He entered and found a snake coiled on his bed. He thrust the spear at it and impaled it, then went out and planted the spear in the courtyard. The snake writhed on the spearhead, and the young man fell dead. It was not known which of them died first, the young man or the snake. We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned this to him, and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah to bring him back to life.' He said, 'Ask forgiveness for your companion.' Then he said, 'There are jinn in Madinah who have become Muslim. If one of them appears to you, give it three warnings. If it returns, then kill it, for it is only a devil.'"
