أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو تَوْبَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ سَلَامٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ سَلَامٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا سَلَامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي السَّلُولِيُّ

أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُ سَهْلُ بْنُ الْحَنْظَلِيَّةِ أَنَّهُمْ سَافِرُوا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ فَأَطْنَبُوا فِي السَّيْرِ حَتَّى كَانَ عَشِيَّةُ حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ فَارِسٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي انْطَلَقْتُ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ حَتَّى طَلَعْتُ جَبَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَإِذَ أَنَا بِهَوَازِنَ عَلَى بَكْرَةِ أَبِيهِمْ بِظُعُنِهِمْ وَنَعَمِهِمْ وَنِسَائِهِمْ قَدِ اجْتَمَعُوا إِلَى حُنَيْنٍ فَتَبَسَّمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَقَالَ «تِلْكَ غَنِيمَةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ غَدًا إِنْ شَاءَ اللهُ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «مَنْ يَحْرُسُنَا اللَّيْلَةَ؟» فَقَالَ أَنَسُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْثَدٍ الْغَنَوِيُّ أَنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ «ارْكَبْ فَرَكِبَ فَرَسًا لَهُ فَجَاءَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «اسْتَقْبِلْ هَذَا الشِّعْبَ حَتَّى تَكُونَ فِي أَعْلَاهُ وَلَا نُغَرَّنَّ مِنْ قِبَلِكَ اللَّيْلَةَ» فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَ خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَى مُصَلَّاهُ فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ «هَلْ أَحْسَسْتُمْ فَارِسَكُمْ؟» قَالَ رَجُلٌ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ مَا حَسَسْنَاهُ فَثُوِّبَ بِالصَّلَاةِ فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي يَلْتَفِتُ إِلَى الشِّعْبِ حَتَّى إِذَا قَضَى صَلَاتَهُ سَلَّمَ وَقَالَ «أَبْشِرُوا فَقَدْ جَاءَ فَارِسُكُمْ فَجَعَلْنَا نَنْظُرُ إِلَى خِلَالِ الشَّجَرِ فِي الشِّعْبِ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَدْ جَاءَ حَتَّى وَقَفَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ إِنِّي انْطَلَقْتُ حَتَّى كُنْتُ فِي أَعَلَى هَذَا الشِّعْبِ حَيْثُ أَمَرَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحْتُ طَلَعْتُ الشِّعْبَيْنِ كِلَيْهِمَا فَنَظَرْتُ فَلَمْ أَرَ أَحَدًا فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «هَلْ نَزَلَتِ اللَّيْلَةَ؟» قَالَ لَا إِلَّا مُصَلِّيًا أَوْ قَاضيَ حَاجَةٍ قَالَ «فَقَدْ أَوْجَبْتَ فَلَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا تَعْمَلَ بَعْدَ هَذَا»

✧ Sahl b. al-Hanzaliyya narrated to him that they traveled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn. They prolonged the march until evening, when the prayer time came while they were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. A horseman came and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I went ahead of you until I climbed such-and-such a mountain, and there I found Hawazin with their women, camels, and sheep—all of them gathered at Hunayn." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "That will be the Muslims' spoils tomorrow, if Allah wills." Then he said, "Who will guard us tonight?" Anas b. Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi said, "I will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Mount." So he mounted a horse of his and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Face this mountain pass until you are at its top, and let us not be taken by surprise from your direction tonight." When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to his place of prayer and prayed two rak'ahs, then said, "Have you sensed your horseman?" A man said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have not sensed him." The call to prayer was given, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while praying, kept turning toward the pass. When he finished his prayer and said the salam, he said, "Rejoice, for your horseman has come." We began looking through the gaps in the trees in the pass, and there he was, coming until he stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, "I went until I was at the top of this pass, where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me. When morning came, I looked out over both sides of the pass but saw no one." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Did you dismount during the night?" He said, "No, except to pray or to relieve myself." He said, "You have fulfilled your duty, and you will not be harmed if you never do another deed after this."
