أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي حَصِينُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ §دَخَلْتُ أَنَا وَحَفْصُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ وَهُوَ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي فَأَطَالَ الْقِيَامَ ثُمَّ جَلَسَ فَقُلْتُ يَا أَبَتِ أَمَا تَعْرِفُ هَذَا؟ فَقَالَ «مَنْ هَذَا؟ فَنَسَبْتُهُ لَهُ فَبَكَى حَتَّى شَهِقَ» ثُمَّ قَالَ «لَقَدْ
سَمِعْتُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ حَدِيثًا لَوْ حَدَّثْتُ بِهِ يَوْمًا مِنَ الدَّهْرِ لَحَدَّثْتُ بِهِ الْيَوْمَ غَزَوْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ تَبُوكَ فَبَعَثَ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ فِي أَرْبَعِينَ رَاكِبًا إِلَى ابْنِ دُومَةَ الْجَنْدَلِ» فَقَالَ «إِنَّ قَدَرْتُمْ عَلَى أَخْذِهِ فَخُذُوهُ وَلَا تَقْتُلُوهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَقْدِرُوا عَلَى أَخْذِهِ فَاقْتُلُوهُ» فَجَاءُوا قَصْرَهُ فَقَالَ أَهْلُهٌ مَا خَرَجَ مُنْذُ شَهْرَيْنِ قَبْلَ الْيَوْمِ فَوَجَدْنَاهُ يَرْمِي الصَّيْدَ فَلَمْ نَقْدِرْ عَلَى أَخْذِهِ فَقَتَلْنَاهُ فَجَاءُوا بِمُدَرَّعَةٍ كَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ دِيبَاجٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَعَلَ أَصْحَابُهُ يَعْجَبُونَ مِنْهَا فَقَالَ «أَتَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ هَذِهِ؟ لَمَنَادِيلُ سَعْدِ بْنِ مُعَاذٍ أَلْيَنُ مِنْهَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ»

✧ I heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that if I were to narrate it any day of time, I would narrate it today. We raided with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ Tabuk, and he sent Khalid b. al-Walid with forty horsemen to Ibn Dumah al-Jandal. He said: "If you are able to capture him, capture him and do not kill him; and if you are not able to capture him, then kill him." They came to his palace, and his household said: "He has not gone out for two months before today." Then we found him shooting game, and we were not able to capture him, so we killed him. They brought a padded garment of brocade that was on him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and his companions began to marvel at it. He said: "Do you marvel at this? The handkerchiefs of Sa'd b. Mu'adh are softer than this in Paradise."
