✧ The hitting of the horse

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الرَّقَاشِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي رَافِعُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ زِيَادٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ عَنْ جَعْيل الْأَشْجَعِيِّ قَالَ

غزوت مع رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فِي بَعْضِ غَزَوَاتِهِ وَأَنَا عَلَى فَرَسٍ لِي «عَجْفَاءَ ضَعِيفَةً فَلَحِقَنِي رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ» فَقَالَ سِرْ يَا صَاحِبَ الْفَرَسِ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ «عَجْفَاءُ ضَعِيفَةٌ فَرَفَعَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مِخْفَقَةً كَانَتْ مَعَهُ فَضَرَبَهَا بِهَا» وَقَالَ «اللهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُ فِيهَا» قَالَ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُنِي مَا أَمْلِكُ رَأْسَهَا إنْ تَقَدُمَ النَّاسَ قال فلَقَدْ بِعْتُ مِنْ بَطْنِهَا بِاثْنَيْ عَشَرَ أَلْفًا

✧ I went on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in one of his campaigns while I was on a horse of mine that was lean and weak. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ caught up with me and said, "Ride on, O owner of the horse." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is lean and weak." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised a small whip he had and struck her with it, and said, "O Allah, bless him in her." He said: I then saw myself unable to hold back her head from getting ahead of the people. He said: And I sold a foal from her belly for twelve thousand.
