✧ From the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that when he would send a commander on a raiding party or an army, he would advise him in his own private self to fear Allah and to be good to the Muslims with him. Then he would say: 'Raid in the name of Allah and in the path of Allah. Fight those who disbelieve in Allah. Raid, but do not act treacherously, do not steal from the spoils, do not mutilate, and do not kill a child. When you meet your enemy among the polytheists, call them to one of three traits; whichever of them they answer you upon, accept from them and refrain from them. Call them to enter Islam. If they do, accept from them and refrain from them. Then call them to move from their abode to the abode of the emigrants. If they do, inform them that they will have what the emigrants have and will be obligated by what the emigrants are obligated by. If they enter Islam but choose their own abode, inform them that they will be like the Bedouin Muslims: the judgment of Allah that applies to the believers will apply to them, but they will have no share in the fay' or the spoils unless they fight alongside the Muslims. If they refuse, then call them to pay the jizyah. If they do, accept from them and refrain from them. If they refuse, then seek help from Allah against them and fight them. If you besiege the people of a fortress and they want you to bring them down to the judgment of Allah, do not bring them down to the judgment of Allah; rather, bring them down to your own judgment, for you do not know whether you will hit upon the judgment of Allah concerning them. And if you besiege the people of a fortress and they want you to grant them the protection of Allah and the protection of His Messenger, do not grant them the protection of Allah and the protection of His Messenger; rather, grant them your own protection and the protection of your father and the protections of your companions. For it is easier for you to violate your own protections, the protections of your fathers, and the protections of your companions than to violate the protection of Allah and the protection of His Messenger.'
