✧ The killing of prisoners of war

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حَرْبٍ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ وَلَقَبُهُ تُرْكٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ وَاقِدٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ يَزِيدَ النَّحْوِيِّ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ بَعَثَ سَرِيَّةً قَالَ «فَغَنِمُوا وَفِيهِمْ رَجُلٌ» فَقَالَ لَهُمْ «إِنِّي لَسْتُ مِنْهُمْ عَشِقْتُ امْرَأَةً فَلَحِقْتُهَا فَدَعُونِي أَنْظُرُ إِلَيْهَا نَظْرَةً ثُمَّ اصْنَعُوا بِي مَا بَدَا لَكُمْ» قَالَ «فَإِذَا امْرَأَةٌ طَوِيلَةٌ أَدْمَاءُ» فَقَالَ لَهَا «أَسْلِمِي حُبَيْشُ قَبْلَ نَفَادِ الْعَيْشِ أَرَأَيْتِ لَوْ تَبِعْتُكُمْ فَلَحِقْتُكُمْ بِحِلْيَةٍ أَوْ أَدْرَكْتُكُمْ بِالْخَوَانِقِ أَلَمْ يَكُ حَقًّا أَنْ يُنَوَّلَ عَاشِقٌ تَكَلَّفَ إِدْلَاجَ السُّرَى والْوَدَائِقَ؟» قَالَتْ نَعَمْ فَدَيْتُكَ قَالَ فَقَدَّمُوهُ فَضَرَبُوا عُنُقَهُ فَجَاءَتِ الْمَرْأَةُ فَوَقَفَتْ عَلَيْهِ فَشَهِقَتْ شَهْقَةً أَوْ شَهْقَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ مَاتَتْ فَلَمَّا قَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَخْبَرُوهُ الْخَبَرَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «أَمَا كَانَ فِيكُمْ رَجُلٌ رَحِيمٌ»

✧ The Prophet ﷺ sent out a military detachment. They took spoils, and among them was a man. He said to them: 'I am not one of them. I fell in love with a woman and followed her. Let me look at her once, then do with me what you wish.' He said: 'There was a tall, dark-brown woman.' He said to her: 'Submit, Hubaysh, before life runs out. Have you considered if I followed you and caught up with you with adornment, or overtook you at the mountain passes? Would it not be right that a lover be granted his desire, who undertook night travel and arduous journeys?' She said: 'Yes, may I be your ransom.' He said: 'They brought him forward and struck his neck. The woman came and stood over him, and let out one or two gasps, then died. When they returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they told him the news. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Was there not among you a merciful man?'
