✧ ʿAbbas b. ʿAbd al-Muttalib said: I was present with the Messenger of God ﷺ at Hunayn. Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. ʿAbd al-Muttalib and I kept close to the Messenger of God ﷺ and did not leave him. The Messenger of God ﷺ was on a white mule that Farwa b. Nufatha al-Judhami had given him. When the Muslims and the disbelievers met, the Muslims turned in flight. The Messenger of God ﷺ began urging his mule towards the disbelievers. ʿAbbas said: I was holding the bridle of the Prophet’s ﷺ mule, restraining it so it would not go too fast, and Abu Sufyan was holding the stirrup of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “O ʿAbbas, call the companions of the samura tree.” ʿAbbas said, and I was a man with a loud voice, and I called at the top of my voice: “Where are the companions of the samura tree? By God, their turning when they heard my voice was like the turning of cows to their calves.” They said, “At your service, at your service.” They and the disbelievers fought, and the call was among the Ansar, saying, “O company of the Ansar.” Then the call was shortened to Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj. The Messenger of God ﷺ looked on from his mule, as if craning towards their fight, and said, “Now the battle has grown hot.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ took some pebbles and threw them into the faces of the disbelievers, then said, “They are routed, by the Lord of Muhammad.” I went to look, and the fighting was as it had been, as far as I could see. By God, it was only when the Messenger of God ﷺ threw his pebbles at them that I never stopped seeing their edge blunted and their affair retreating until—meaning—God routed them.
