أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ عَنْ عَوْفٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ قَالَ قَالَ عُبَيْدَةُ السَّلْمَانِيُّ لَمَّا كَانَ حَيْثُ §أُصِيبَ أَصْحَابُ النَّهَرِ قَالَ
قَالَ عَلِيٌّ «ابْتَغُوا فِيهِمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ إِنْ كَانُوا هُمُ الْقَوْمُ الَّذِينَ ذَكَرَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَإِنَّ فِيهِمْ رَجُلًا مُخْدَجَ الْيَدِ أَوْ مَثْدُونَ الْيَدِ أَوْ مُؤْدَنَ الْيَدِ» فَابْتَغَيْنَاهُ فَوَجَدْنَاهُ فَدَلَلْنَاهُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ قَالَ «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» قَالَ «وَاللهِ لَوْلَا أَنْ تَبْطَرُوا ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ كَلِمَةً مَعْنَاهَا لَحَدَّثْتُكُمْ بِمَا قَضَى الله عَلَى لِسَانِ نَبِيِّهِ ﷺ لِمَنْ وَلِيَ قَتْلَ هَؤُلَاءِ» قُلْتُ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ؟ قَالَ «إِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ثَلَاثًا»
Translation

✧ Ali said, "Look for him among them, for if they are the people whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned, then among them is a man with a maimed hand, or a hand like a breast, or a defective hand." We searched for him and found him, and we directed him to it. When he saw him, he said, "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest." He said, "By Allah, were it not that you would become arrogant—" then he mentioned a word meaning: "—I would tell you what Allah has decreed on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ for those who took charge of killing these people." I said, "Did you hear it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" He said, "Yes, by the Lord of the Kaaba," three times.
