أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ عَنْ أُمِّ مُوسَى قَالَتْ

قَالَتْ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ «وَالَّذِي تَحْلِفُ بِهِ أُمُّ سَلَمَةَ إِنْ كَانَ أَقْرَبُ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ عَلِيٌّ» قَالَتْ لَمَّا كَانَ غَدَاةَ قُبِضَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَكَانَ أَرَى فِي حَاجَةٍ أَظُنُّهُ بَعَثَهُ فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ «جَاءَ عَلِيٌّ؟» ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ قَالَتْ فَجَاءَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ فَلَمَّا أَنْ جَاءَ عَرَفْنَا أَنَّ لَهُ إِلَيْهِ حَاجَةً فَخَرَجْنَا مِنَ الْبَيْتِ وَكُنَّا عُدْنَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي بَيْتِ عَائِشَةَ فَكُنْتُ فِي آخِرِ مَنْ خَرَجَ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ ثُمَّ جَلَسْتُ أَدْنَاهُنَّ مِنَ الْبَابِ فَأَكَبَّ عَلَيْهِ عَلِيٌّ فَكَانَ آخِرَ النَّاسِ بِهِ عَهْدًا جَعَلَ يُسَارُّهُ وَيُنَاجِيهِ

Translation

✧ Umm Salamah said: "By the One by whom Umm Salamah swears, the closest of the people in covenant with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was Ali." She said: "It was on the morning when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent for him, and I think he had been sent on an errand. He kept saying, 'Has Ali come?' three times." She said: "He came before sunrise. When he came, we knew that he had a need for him, so we left the house. That day we had visited the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the house of Aisha, and I was among the last to leave the house, then I sat closest of them to the door. Ali leaned over him, and he was the last of the people to have a covenant with him, whispering to him and conversing privately with him."
